Jonathan Trott Criticises Shubman Gill’s On-Field Behaviour: Last-Over Controversy in India vs England Test

The India vs England Test match took a dramatic turn during the final over, leading to a heated on-field exchange that sparked debate among cricket commentators and fans alike. The controversy began when England’s Zak Crawley appeared to be wasting time at the crease, repeatedly stepping away and engaging in typical tail-end defensive tactics as India sought to squeeze in a couple of overs before stumps.

Indian skipper Shubman Gill, frustrated with Crawley’s actions, confronted the English opener after he took a blow to the fingers from a sharp delivery. The situation escalated as words were exchanged between players on both sides, with Gill notably pointing his finger and engaging in a somewhat confrontational manner. Ben Duckett and KL Rahul quickly intervened, but not before the episode caught the attention of everyone on the field and in the commentary box.

Former England batsman and current coach Jonathan Trott did not hold back his opinion during a Jio Sports studio discussion. Trott criticised Gill’s behaviour, drawing a comparison to previous Indian captains’ aggressive on-field approaches. Trott remarked, “I don’t like the acting from Shubman Gill. As a captain, you set the tone. Pointing fingers and getting very confrontational is not necessary. I’m all for being competitive, but sometimes you have to rise above it.”

In contrast, former India captain Anil Kumble took a more measured stance, noting that he had rarely seen Gill so animated and that it’s part of the Test match atmosphere, especially when the stakes are high.

The exchange is now a talking point among cricket circles, with opinions divided on acceptable on-field conduct and the line between competitiveness and unsportsmanlike behaviour.

As the Test series heats up, cricket fans will be watching closely to see how both teams handle the intensity and whether captains will lead by setting an example of restraint and sportsmanship or stoke the competitive fire even further.
