Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has emerged as a standout performer in Test cricket, finds himself in a tricky situation as he vies for a spot in India’s ODI team. Despite boasting a striking strike rate of 164 in T20Is, he has been overlooked in favor of players like Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
As the 2027 ODI World Cup approaches, many believe Jaiswal deserves a place in the squad. However, the presence of veteran Rohit Sharma, who continues to showcase his skills at 38, complicates matters for the young batsman.
Jaiswal is not letting this setback deter him. Instead, he is honing his skills, aiming to take the place of his childhood idol, Rohit Sharma, in the playing XI. India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, shared insights on Jaiswal’s preparations, stating, “He practices and they are pretty much aware that their turn will come. And they prepare well.”
Furthermore, Jaiswal is putting in extra effort at the nets to improve his leg-spin bowling, which could make him a versatile player for the team. Kotak noted, “Jaiswal always bowls leg-spin. He looks more consistent now, and that is a positive sign.”
India’s recent performance in the ODI series has faced challenges, including a narrow seven-wicket loss in the first match against Australia. The match was affected by weather conditions, shortening the contest to a mere 26 overs.

The second ODI will take place in Adelaide on Thursday, promising to be a crucial opportunity for Jaiswal and the rest of the team to bounce back.
