In an electrifying encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, South Africa emerged victorious over Afghanistan in the 13th match of the 2026 T20 World Cup. This gripping match required not one, but two Super Overs to determine the winner on February 11.
After winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat first, posting a commendable total of 187 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Key contributions came from Ryan Rickelton, who scored 61 runs, and Quinton de Kock, who added 59 runs to the tally. The Afghan bowlers, led by Azmatullah Omarzai with figures of 3/41 and Rashid Khan who took 2 wickets for 28 runs, fought hard to restrict the batsmen.
In response, Afghanistan’s opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz dazzled the crowd with a stunning 84 runs off just 42 balls, giving his team a solid start. However, despite his efforts, the Afghan team fell short, finishing their innings also at 187 runs but losing all 10 wickets in just 19.4 overs.
With both teams tied, the game moved into the Super Overs. The first Super Over ended dramatically with neither team able to secure a victory, leading to a second Super Over where South Africa clinched the win. This match will certainly go down as one of the memorable ones in T20 history.
Reflecting on the match, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan expressed his pride in his team, stating, “We played well but were just a bit unlucky. We had chances to win, but it didn’t go our way.”
