Asia Cup Trophy Handover Planned

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has an exciting opportunity ahead. After India’s dramatic win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has proposed a special ceremony in Dubai for the trophy handover. This event is scheduled to occur in the first week of November.

Context of the Trophy Offer

The ACC informed the BCCI, “If you want the trophy, we can hold a ceremony where you can receive it.” This offer comes in light of previous tensions between the teams during the Asia Cup 2025, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack, which affected the players’ interactions.

Historical Significance

The trophy has been kept at the ACC headquarters since October after BCCI’s refusal to receive it from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. Notably, Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister and PCB chairman, took the trophy back to Pakistan when the Indian team declined to participate in a handover amid ongoing tensions.

BCCI’s Response and Support

While BCCI showed interest in the trophy, they have not accepted the ACC’s direct invitation. Support has been evident from other ACC members, including Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, emphasizing that this matter should gain resolution at an ICC level.

Upcoming ICC Meeting

A discussion regarding the trophy is expected at an upcoming ICC meeting next month, which will be chaired by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah. An ACC source indicated that the correspondence involved multiple stakeholders including BCCI and ACC representatives.

BCCI remains firm in its stance, insisting they won’t collect the trophy directly, suggesting that it is best managed via the ICC discussions.
