In a high-pressure lead-up to the final ODI in Sydney, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a stark ultimatum to fast bowler Harshit Rana: “Perform kar, warna bahar bitha dunga” (Perform or I will make you sit out). This decisive moment came after Rana struggled in the previous matches, prompting concern about his position on the team.
Rana faced intense scrutiny after taking only two wickets and conceding 86 runs in 12 overs during the first two ODI matches against Australia. Coach Gambhir, who had steadfastly defended him, felt the need to address the issue directly as Rana’s performance was underwhelming.
“I called him to communicate the expectations clearly,” said Gambhir. “The pressure of international cricket is immense, and only consistent performances can validate selection.”
Rana responded to Gambhir’s challenge on Saturday, producing a remarkable four-wicket haul, helping India bowl out Australia for just 236 runs. The young fast bowler generated impressive pace and bounce, showcasing his talent.
| Match | Wickets Taken | Runs Conceded |
|---|---|---|
| First ODI | 1 | 43 |
| Second ODI | 1 | 43 |
| Third ODI | 4 | 50 |
Sharvan, Rana’s childhood coach, revealed that the young bowler felt tremendous pressure before the match. “He wanted to silence the criticism with his performance,” said Sharvan. “Gambhir’s direct approach gave him the clear message that talent needs to shine under scrutiny.”
With the five-match T20I series against Australia commencing next week, many are eager to see if Rana will maintain his performance level. He will certainly aim to build on this newfound confidence following such a pivotal match.
