India’s senior pacer Mohammed Shami has raised serious concerns over India’s bowling display after the team suffered a heavy defeat in the first Test against England at Headingley. With India unable to defend a massive target of 371 runs, Shami chose to speak candidly about the lack of support for Jasprit Bumrah from the rest of the bowling unit.
Bumrah Needs More Support, Says Shami
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Shami emphasized that while Jasprit Bumrah performed admirably, claiming five wickets in the first innings, the other bowlers failed to maintain consistent pressure on the English batters. England comfortably chased down the target in the final hour, leading to criticism of India’s bowling strategy.
“In bowling, other Indian bowlers should talk to Bumrah and learn from him. They should talk about planning with him and support him. If they support Bumrah, we can easily win matches,” Shami remarked.
He acknowledged the individual efforts of Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, both of whom picked up two wickets each in the second innings, but asserted that their breakthroughs came too late to impact the match outcome.
“Bowling is Our Main Problem” – Shami on India’s Performance
Shami was quick to point out that India’s batting unit performed exceptionally well, with the team scoring over 450 runs in the first innings and 364 in the second, including five centuries. He stressed that the major concern is the bowling department, as India has consistently allowed opposition teams to score freely in critical phases.
“Everyone says batting in England is tough, but our batters did well. We need to focus more on bowling and fielding. It is very important to take wickets with the new ball. Bumrah ka koi saath de, that’s crucial. We allowed England too many easy runs.”
As the Test series progresses, Team India faces added challenges, with reports confirming that Jasprit Bumrah will miss the second Test for workload management.
What’s Next for Team India?
With India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, the onus is now on other Indian pacers to step up and deliver impactful performances in Bumrah’s absence. Shami’s brutally honest assessment serves as a wake-up call for the bowlers to rise to the occasion and provide India with the cutting edge needed to make a strong comeback.
